Crystal Quotient
Privacy Policy
Crystal Quotient is an iPhone app for verbal skills training, published by Biolexic LLC ("Biolexic", "we"). This policy explains what happens to information when you use it.
In short: Crystal Quotient doesn't collect your data. Its App Store privacy label is Data Not Collected.
No account
There is no account and no sign-in. We don't ask for, collect or store your name, email address, contacts, location, photos, device identifiers or usage data.
Your progress stays on your device
Your vocabulary lists, review schedule, reading sessions, answers, scores and streak are saved only in the app's storage on your iPhone. We have no copy of them. Deleting the app deletes this data.
Review reminders
If you turn on review reminders, the app schedules notifications on your iPhone using iOS's local notification system. Each reminder mentions only how many words are due and one word from the app's own list. No push token is created, and nothing about your reminders or your review schedule is sent to us or to anyone else. You can turn reminders off in the app's Settings or in iPhone Settings.
No analytics, ads or tracking
The app contains no analytics, advertising or tracking SDKs. It doesn't track you across other companies' apps or websites, and nothing is shared with third parties for advertising or analytics.
Word lookups
When you open a word, the app asks for its definition over an encrypted connection:
- The request goes to a pass-through server run by Biolexic, which forwards it to Merriam-Webster's Dictionary API and returns the definition to the app.
- Only the word being looked up (the headword) and its part of speech are sent, in the body of the request rather than in the web address. Nothing about you or your progress is included.
- The server doesn't store or log the words you look up or the definitions it returns, and its responses are marked so they aren't cached.
- Like any internet server, it sees your device's IP address when the app connects. It uses that address only transiently, to apply rate limits that protect the service from abuse: the address is converted to a one-way hash, and the short-lived counters keyed by that hash expire within minutes. The server's own code doesn't log your IP address or link it to any word. Our hosting provider (Vercel) keeps brief request logs for security and operations; those logs don't contain the words you look up.
- Merriam-Webster receives the request from Biolexic's server, not from your device, and doesn't receive your IP address.
- The server also keeps a daily count of lookups (a number only, with no words or addresses) so the app stays within the dictionary service's daily limits.
Definitions are shown while the app is open and are not saved on your device.
Children
Because the app doesn't collect personal information, it doesn't collect personal information from anyone, including children.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll post the new version on this page with a new effective date.
